The History of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania

The history of Lebanon County, PA, isn’t as long or complicated as other counties. However, it is still important to note what events happened when, and their future impact. From early settlements to current farms, there are lots to read about. Thankfully, this page isn’t that long, allowing us to talk about plenty of topics.

While we are not historians, Blackman Bail Bonds does love to learn about our state. We drive throughout it every day with bail bond agents 24-hours daily.

The Area’s First Settlers

As other communities became founded, Lebanon County stayed relatively small for a while. It wasn’t until Germans moved to the area from New York that the population grew. Unfortunately, with more settlers came border disputes with the indigenous tribes in the area. However, by 1774, the Revolutionary War took all of the state’s focus.

The name of Lebanon was taken from the Biblical name, meaning White Mountain. That is likely a reference to how the mountains and hills look in winter snowfall.

Overcrowding the Capitol and New Counties

Sure, it’s only about an hour’s drive today, but imagine walking to Harrisburg every day. That is what our local legislators had to do until we received our own county. Finally, by 1813, the capitol had heard the people’s cries of inconvenience. Surprisingly, it took nearly a decade for Lebanon city to become incorporated.

A turnpike and canal shortly followed, expanding the community’s role in trade. Soon, iron mines and furnaces would solidify the area’s place in generations of war efforts.

The Industrial Revolution

From the late 1800s until WWII’s end, the area stayed known primarily for manufacturing. Steel, iron, leather, and ammunition all became made here. As more furnaces and factories launched, fuel started to get scarce. Soon, it took added railroads to keep the flow of coal moving throughout the state.

After WWII, not as much manufacturing was necessary or even needed. Slowly, the local economy transitioned towards agriculture and military facilities instead.

Lebanon County’s Modern Era

After the 1960s, things sharply declined for the state as a whole. The once driving force of smelting, quarries, and factories were steadily slowing. Hurricane Agnes left Lebanon County a mess, one of the few Atlantic storms to hit. The nearby Three-Mile Island event also made people nervous about living in the state.

Finally, by the 1990s, a renewed focus on business and education took off. Commercial parks opened, as well as new universities and colleges, expanding the economy.
