The History of the York County, PA, Jail
The original prison has similarities with California’s Alcatraz, being from the same era. However, every iteration of the facility required frequent upgrades to keep it modern. The first York County jail operated just over 100 years, from 1750 to 1855. By then, it was already outdated, requiring a new stone facility to be constructed.
By 1906 a brick prison was built, operating alongside the prior stone one. Eventually, only the brick building remained, while the older one was demolished. The brick jail operated until 1979, when it was finally replaced with a modern facility. It’s this final location that houses area inmates, as well as ICE detainees.
