The History of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania
The history of Dauphin County surprisingly predates much of the US and even some countries. Some of the earliest artifacts we have come from the Stone Age or earlier. Early European Settlements
At about the same time he met Pocahontas’ tribe, John Smith also met the Susquehannock. These early impressions paved the way for European settlers to start trading. By the end of the 1600s, the French settlers also started flocking to the area. By 1766, the new trading post of Harrisburg started seeing permanent residents.
The Revolutionary War ended in 1783, allowing Pennsylvania to focus on infrastructure and manufacturing. Soon, the rivers became the then-modern-day highway system, bringing forth the Canal Era.
Pennsylvania’s Canal Era
As production ramped up, the people needed a leader as the population exploded. By 1822 the new capitol building would finish construction, only to burn by 1897. Bridges, newspapers, and banks shortly followed, along with trains and trolley cars. Once the Civil War took place by 1861, Pennsylvania was ready for action.
Our manufacturing prowess kept the Union well-stocked, eventually splitting the Confederate troops. They didn’t have the resources to fight on two fronts, soon surrendering to the USA.
21st Century Dauphin County
Local cities quickly recognized that communities need more than smokestacks in their skylines. By the Turn of the Century, improved efforts officially began, modernizing the area. While we had some of the first electric trolleys, the automobile left them obsolete. By the 1930s, the need for labor unions arose, leading to strikes at Hershey’s plant.
By World War II, though, we returned to doing what we do best. Renewed manufacturing efforts lead to another substantial population boost for decades.
Dauphin County: 2000s to Today
Like many, the oil crisis of the 1970s and recession of the 1980s slowed growth. By the early 2000s, though, the population once again saw huge gains. Over the decades, we have witnessed a significant shift from manufacturing to healthcare. As a result, hospitals and universities found lots of eager students in the area.
What was once heavily blue-collar now has tons of working professionals. Plus, staying the more affordable neighbor to New York is a benefit for many.
