The History of the Dauphin County, PA, Jail

The very first jail was built on public land designated by John Harris, Jr., himself. It didn’t last long and was demolished in 1839. A new jail was constructed soon after in Harrisburg, which was completed by 1841. By the turn of the century, a second-floor became necessary.

As the population increased, the jail was relocated, but it quickly fell into disrepair. Finally, by 1957 a permanent facility was built, with frequent renovations. In 1999, further deterioration reduced the prison’s capacity in half. Today there are plenty of functioning buildings and halls to house far more inmates.
