A Brief History of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania
The history of Cumberland County, PA, is a unique one, given its location and resources. Even since the early days, it has been a pioneer of progress for other cities. Today, the community is home to lots of residents with a range of backgrounds. However, it didn’t always start that way, especially during the days of colonization.

The General Assembly
About 25 years before the nation’s independence, the colony’s first General Assembly took place. Before we became a state, they were the governing body over the colonists. Today, the General Assembly still meets on the first Tuesday in January. After that, they hold frequent sessions throughout the year or as needed.
In short, they act as a regional House and Senate to determine local legislature. Each term is for four years instead of the six years state senators have.
In colonial times, it was the Provincial Assembly, a unilateral commission fulfilling the king’s wishes. Today, both parties are represented, along with caucuses and a third-party member.
Confederate Occupation
Of the first municipalities, Carlisle and Shippensburg are the two oldest. Carlisle Bunkers housed some of the nation’s early army members while Shippensburg was an outpost. As the Civil War neared the end, the Confederacy grew desperate. They marched through Cumberland Valley, their troops occupying wherever they could.
Although some would attempt an attack on Harrisburg, most went to Gettysburg. Soon, they discovered that they lacked the numbers to pull off a two-pronged attack.
The years following the war saw explosive growth, leading towards the capitol. Over a century later, it will create a new metro area with nearby cities.
Joining the State Capitol
With each war, from the Revolutionary to WWII, the state developed better manufacturing methods. For a while, it was the literal driving force for Pennsylvania and the nation. The 1930s, 70s, and 80s, though, brought crippling recessions that hindered growth. However, through thick and thin, Cumberland County would reach Harrisburg.
By 1983, the SMA would add Carlisle and Lebanon (both the city and county). In 2003, it split again, and by 2010 would see further changes.
Today, we have some of the largest municipalities in the country. Thanks to new colleges and universities, we also have lots of professional occupations to fill.
Cumberland County Today
At the turn of the century, Pennsylvania seemed like nothing more than factories. Within the following 100 years, though, manufacturing would eventually get replaced. After WWII, the speed and volume of ammunition and supplies weren’t as dire. The country enjoyed an economic boom following the war.
Eventually, though, new opportunities became necessary outside of the steel and chocolate factories. Today, you can see lots of healthcare, broadcasting, and construction facilities, among others.
