Famous People from Cumberland County You Should Know

While there are lots of famous people from Cumberland County, not all are household names. However, they certainly should be thanks to their contributions to society. From professional athletes to suffragettes, there are many types of prominent figures in the community. Here are some of the few that we can think of worth mentioning.

Of course, if we missed any, please let us at Blackman Bail Bonds know. We love to learn more about the cities we work in and live.

Margaret Carlson

Margaret Carlson has a long career in journalism but stays best known at Time Magazine. There, she was the first female columnist in the publication’s history. In 2005, she left Time for Bloomberg but had also worked with Esquire and others. In addition to journalism, she has also worked for government agencies, politicians, and the FTC.

She has worked with prominent publications from coast to coast, and especially Washington, D.C. In 2011, she received the Belva Ann Lockwood Award for her legal work.

Elena Bennett

Elena Bennett has dedicated her life to studying the ecosystem and humans’ impact. Currently, she acts as the Principal Investigator at the Bennett Lab at McGillMost importantly, she and her team investigate the effects of services like landscaping. Their studies have found that many services we use daily, unfortunately, lead to weakened soils.

In addition to research, Bennett is a leading authority in the scientific community. She and her students have received more than 30 awards, fellowships, and grants.

Jacquelyn Fetrow

Jacquelyn Fetrow has a long career in computational biology and studying proteins. Today, she stays the acting president of Albright College since 2017. Fetrow started her scientific work in 1990 at the University of Albany SUNY. From there, she co-founded GeneFormatics, Inc. using technology she developed at Scripps Research.

In 2003 she became the Reynold Professor of Computational Biology at Wake Forest. Six years later, she would get appointed to the position of Dean.

Danielle Fotopoulos

Danielle Fotopoulos isn’t only a soccer player but has dedicated her life to the sport. Although she coaches now, she still holds the NCAA records for both goals and points. In 1998, she helped lead the University of Florida to victory. The next year, she represented the nation, her team winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Today, she coaches women’s soccer at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL. However, she’s still a prominent figure from Camp Hill, PA, and sports at large.

Emma Bugbee

Although Pennsylvania has always been inclusive, it hasn’t always felt that way. It’s why we had folks like Emma Bugbee fight for change to happen. After teaching high school Greek courses, she became a journalist for the New York Herald. There, she was their first female reporter, where she covered suffragist topics.

Most notably was her coverage of the 1914 Suffragette Hike from Manhattan to Albany, NY. She passed away at 93 at her most recent home in Rhode Island in 1981.

There are lots to discover at this local history center. For any missing landmarks, let Blackman Bail Bonds know.
