The history of Lancaster County is full of firsts for the state and even country. While the wealthy and powerful settled in the capital, the rural immigrants founded our community. Over time, the region would attract diverse ethnicities and religions enticed by William Penn’s acceptance. As the governing bodies maintained England’s presence, the backwoods saw lots of unique ideas.

First Regional Settlements
Many religious groups fled Europe to practice their faiths freely in the new colony. As these refugees and farmers populated the area, new county lines became introduced. While the European settlers’ numbers grew, so, too, did the indigenous tribes. The Susquehannock emerged as the most advanced and largest until defeated by a five-tribe alliance.
By 1763, the Pontiac War led to friendly and warring groups alike clashing. Combined with disputes over the neighboring border, times started looking bleak.
Lord Baltimore’s Dispute
Unfortunately, many of the colonies were experiencing rapid growth, leading to border disputes. Because the nation hadn’t formed yet, each one had regional rulers overlooking them. Where Maryland meets Pennsylvania soon lead to conflicts from Lord Baltimore claiming his stake. Unfortunately, settlers with Pennsylvania charters also claimed to own the land.
Although they reached a compromise, it quickly got broken by Baltimore’s agent, Thomas Cresap. Unfortunately for Lord Baltimore, the king’s court ruled he forfeited the land due to negligence.
The Christina Riot
Pennsylvania is far enough north that it adopted abolitionist laws sooner than other regions. Unfortunately, with the Mason-Dixon Line nearby, it also raised tensions with the south. Four enslaved people escaped from Maryland, soon pursued by their owner, Edward Gorsuch. After securing warrants, he led federal marshals to Pennsylvania, leading to a firefight.
Thirty-eight became people arrested on charges of treason, which eventually got dropped. The southerners’ displeasure at this ruling led to several more conflicts soon after.
Reconstruction Era
After the fall of the Confederacy, the nation started to rebuild. With reconstruction came manufacturing and the fuel needed to sustain it. As the factories of the north continued expanding, coal became a top commodity. The need for fuel helped the railroads grow, phasing out the canal systems.
Lancaster County became known for supplying clothing, food, and other resources. It wouldn’t be until after WWII that things would slow down.
Lancaster County Today
Over time, the industries that took off no longer seemed necessary by a modern community. Instead, the shift towards higher education and healthcare professions became the focus. Soon, lots of new colleges, universities, and employers flocked to the area. Today, you can find lots of prominent brands operating throughout the region.
Now we have a thriving tourism industry, as well as better-paying jobs. What was once forgeries and factory smoke is now skyscrapers and medical facilities.
