History of Harrisburg, PA
Although you can find lots of people living here, not everyone knows the story. Instead, the history of Harrisburg, PA, is a mystery to some.
While we can’t cover it all here, you can at least get a primer. Continue reading this brief retelling of the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Indigenous Peoples of Harrisburg
Experts believe that the city dates back to 3000 BC with the Peixtin tribe. Many area rivers created a crossroads, promoting trade among other tribes and peoples.
Captain John Smith of Pocahontas fame also may have made the first contact. After that, French and Swedish traders had started emerging, along with other tribes.
In addition to the local Susquehanna, the Algonquian, Shawnees, and nomads moved in later. By the early 1700s, times were beginning to change for the entire country.
Harris’ Ferry
In the 1700s, an English trader, John Harris, settled his claim. By 1733, he gained a ferry license, establishing Harris’ Ferry.
Fifty years later, and his son, John Harris Jr., wishes to make a town. He has it surveyed, naming it Harrisburg in honor of his father.
Officially, the town became incorporated in 1791, and then as the capital in 1812. By 1819, the capitol building was starting to get built, where it still stands.
Early Industries
Much as it did for the indigenous tribes, Harrisburg was becoming an industrial hub. By the 1800s, the city established a railroad, feeding its agricultural and steel growth.
Early on, Harrisburg also attracted people from many different cultures. However, the primary focus on farming and industry kept the arts from developing as quickly.
Even the Underground Railroad found the area as a vital place to stop. Here, slaves would find supplies and passage to Canada via the rail system.
Harrisburg and the Civil War
Because of Harrisburg’s success as a rail hub, the Confederacy targeted it. In addition to shipping, the city also provided the Union a place to train.
Although the Confederates had staged a successful attack, they ultimately got pushed back. Surprisingly, this all happened during the Gettysburg Campaign, at the height of the conflict.
While the Confederates had enjoyed temporary success, they never took our capitol. Thanks to Lee having to change courses, Ewell lost support and retreated.
